Amish Food

Wednesday July 29, 2009
What can you do to follow up on a silly day spent in Hell? Well, you can drive to Amish Country! Really, we decided to go to the Indian Sand Dunes National Lakeshore to let the kids see a Great Lake up close, but while searching our resource books for a good place to eat lunch we settled on a restaurant in Middlebury, IN. The Garmin who is helping direct our adventure told us it was only a 40 min detour on the way to the lakeshore. So off we went on a series of ever shrinking country roads through rural Michigan and Indiana. There sure are a lot of fields out there. We past many beautiful farms and we were getting worried when we finally arrived at the Village Inn. I was a tiny cafĂ© in a small town. Our server was indeed a young Amish girl and the ladies busy in the kitchen were Amish too. We arrived at the perfect time for a combination lunch/dinner – lupper, spinner?? Everyone was hungry and happy to realize their varied menu did not force us all to eat dreaded Amish specialties. Aunty Up reviewed the menu and ordered a serving of pretzel bread. She then offered it for tastes and suddenly everyone was on board for Amish deliciousness. Sandwiches, burgers, and all tasty treats were served to kids on pretzel bread, while the adults enjoyed potato-bacon soup, fried chicken and a mish-mash of scalloped potatoes and ham. We saw horse and buggies rolling on the road, to complete our Amish experience. One thing is for sure, we will be searching for the recipe for pretzel bread! Then we realized that we were passing a time change and so we had an extra hour to drive to the Indiana shore. When we arrived to the park we checked out the campsites but decided to opt for a local campground with electricity and the kids nicely set up camp. We had trouble getting a fire going due to wet wood but otherwise our day ended on a nice note will all of us just having a snack because we were still full from our big lunch.
